Claire Heywood - SunYoga

Claire_Mar_2011Claire has been a yoga student for over 25 years, teaching yoga for well over 15 years, retreats for 5 years and practising shiatsu massage since 2004.  Her teaching style is eclectic, fun, intuitive, creative and ever evolving.  She draws her extensive knowledge and teaching inspiration from the traditions of Hatha Yoga, Oki-Do Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Shiatsu Massage, and her long history of dance and theatre right back to her very first jazz ballet lesson as an 8 year old girl.

Claire brings her playful spirit right into the heart of her teaching and aims to help her students achieve balance, best health and personal happiness through the art of SunYoga.

She writes regular articles, and in 2009 co-created and produced a guided relaxation CD, the elements. In 2008 she founder SunYoga.

  • Oki-Do Yoga Teaching Certificate
  • Certified Shiatsu Practitioner
  • Diploma of Arts - Dance - Victorian College of the Arts
  • Graduate of the John Bolton Theatre School
  • Member of AAMT and Yoga Australia (Level 2)

Claire’s philosophy on life, wellbeing & the art of Yoga:

I love using cheeky humour & a splash of irreverence in class to help my students relax, soften and undo. Using humour is a positive way to work with our habits and limiting beliefs. With lightness and laughter walls dissolve, and a space is created for something fresh to emerge.   The path of yoga leads us towards unity; becoming whole, embracing and celebrating our splendid, individual uniqueness and taking steps to release the negative habits that keep us trapped in our well worn patterns of life.

My teaching style appeals to mature adults who are light hearted and dedicated to making life as happy, healthy and real as possible. (If you like your yoga class to be quiet, reverential and following the Text Book of Yoga to the letter, then I'm probably not your gal!)

As the Dalai Lama says:

We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.

In a SunYoga class I provide a friendly and accepting environment for people from all walks of life; I help you to relax, connect in and make positive changes to improve your wellbeing. Come and join us!

Our philosophy

We promise that you will never be bored!

SunYoga classes are constantly evolving, responding to individual needs on the day, the flow of seasons and our ongoing yogic studies...

In our current culture of obsession with the body beautiful, youth, celebrity and ever increasing material success, we are often left feeling profoundly inadequate. These obsessions even (sadly) filter through to the yoga world, which is so often portrayed in the media by the limiting and misrepresentative image of a young, fit & flexible model.

SunYoga embraces and is enjoyed by everybody; all ages, shapes and sizes.  Physical fitness is just a part of the big yoga story.

Yoga brings health and happiness to the whole self; it works the body, relaxes & opens your mind, and connects you to spirit.

With regular practice we can achieve our greatest potential in all aspects of life, both on and off the yoga mat.
