What is Yoga?
The word Yoga means; to join, to bind, a yoke. The aim of yoga is to unite all parts of ourselves; our body, mind and spirit. Yoga classes, in general, involve a combination of physical exercises that stretch and strengthen all parts of the body, breathing exercises that improve our lung function, and relaxation to calm our mind and bring deep rest.
Yoga is an ancient practice, it's origins reach back as far as 3000 years! It was developed in India by spiritual seekers as a pathway towards “enlightenment”. These ancient yogis (yoga students) were driven by a desire to answer many deep questions about life. Perennial questions such as: What would it be like to function at the maximum potential of our minds & bodies? They were following no particular religion, nor teacher, they just experimented to see what works best!
In modern and practical terms yoga simply brings better overall health, improved fitness and flexibility, peace of mind and on a psychological level, greater acceptance of the self bringing an easier passage through life.
What are the benefits of Yoga?
The benefits of yoga are massive and unlimited! The more you do it the better it gets and with time the journey just keeps getting deeper and richer. Here is a list of the common benefits that our students report:
What type of Yoga do you teach at SunYoga?
Here at SunYoga we draw from the ancient traditions of Hatha Yoga. We have our own unique approach to yoga that is fun, inclusive and light hearted. Hatha Yoga is the generic type of traditional Indian yoga that most modern yoga forms are based in.
We want you to enjoy yourself! We actively encourage fun, laughter and enjoyment. We take our job very seriously. Our job is to bring you happiness, to help you to lighten up and relax, whilst also improving your overall health and wellbeing.
How many people are in the class?
Our studio holds a maximum of around 18 students. General class sizes range from 8 to 14 people. We aim to keep our class sizes small so we can give each student individual instruction.
What is the age group of the people in the class?
Our student age range is mostly in the 30 – 65 area, but we welcome people of all ages.
Do any men do Yoga?
Yes they do. Yoga is fantastic for men. Our class ratios sit at around 10% men, 90% women but sometimes men are in the majority! We would love to see this balance shift and have more male students... There are lots of famous male yogis, maybe you could be the next one!
What do I wear to Yoga?
Wear exercise clothes that are comfortable and modest, this is for everybody’s comfort. Please don’t wear strong scents/after shave or sharp jewellery. For your digestive comfort it is best not too eat a big meal for about 2 hours before you come. Yoga is done without shoes so have clean feet and bring socks if the weather is cool.
Do I need to bring anything?
We provide mats, blocks, blankets, everything you may need in the class. You are welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer. The studio has a room that you can change in and we have filtered water available at all times.
Most importantly, don't forget to bring along your sense of humour!
How much does it cost?
As a new customer you are eligible for our very generous introductory offers. Once you have completed your intro offers there are a variety of rates available for bulk classes and memberships. For more info go to the pricing page.
I want to try Yoga but I don’t know if I’ll like it. Do I have to commit to a course?
You can attend as a casual participant to begin and then take it from there. Our introductory offers give you the opportunity to try, with no obligation to continue at very affordable rates. We recommend that you come for at least 3 months of yoga to feel the benefits and gain a basic level of understanding.
I need to relax, will Yoga help me?
From the moment you walk up the stairs you will start to relax. We have created a beautiful, peaceful, healing environment which is a sanctuary from the hurly burly of everyday life. Most of the classes are conducted without music giving your senses time to relax; free from distraction and external stimulation. We focus on the breath; sensing, feeling, listening, connecting and bringing your awareness to your whole being. Each class ends with a guided relaxation which is deeply relaxing and healing.
I have a bad back, is Yoga safe for me?
At SunYoga it is our priority to make our classes safe for everyone and with particular care of the spine. Each class begins with therapeutic and gentle mobilising movements which are safe and very beneficial for bad backs. Combined with your common sense and commitment not to do anything that harms, we are confident that we can improve your back problems. Our small class policy means we can work with you on an individual level.
We also offer some one-on-one, individually tailored sessions for those who need that little bit extra care.
I want to loose weight, will Yoga help me?
We can’t guarantee that you will loose weight, BUT, combined with sensible eating and regular exercise yoga will help with weight loss. Yoga tones and strengthens all the major muscle groups, improves organ function, promotes good digestion and most importantly helps you to feel better about yourself. When you are feeling good it is easier to avoid bad eating habits!
Unique to SunYoga is SunYoga Groove, fun classes that combine all the benefits of yoga with extra attention paid to toning, strengthening and getting your heart beating.
Is it safe to come to the studio at night? Is there parking available? Public transport?
SunYoga is situated in a small strip of shops which are well lit at night. There is street parking right outside our front door and we are very close (2 minutes walk) to busy Sunshine Railway Station and buses.
I’m pregnant, can I come to Yoga? Is it safe?
If you are new to yoga we recommend that you wait until after 12 weeks to start pre-natal yoga. You can then safely attend classes until your baby is due. If you are a regular yoga person and become pregnant then inform your teacher as soon as you find out and we work with you to ensure a safe and beneficial yoga practice throughout your pregnancy.
Yoga is great for pregnancy and helps on so many levels. We do specific yoga postures to stretch, strengthen and prepare your body for birth and breathing exercises/relaxation to keep you calm and grounded.
Pre-natal yoga helps you adapt to the rapid physical, hormonal and emotional changes, and deal with the natural fears and anxieties that commonly arise during pregnancy.
Is SunYoga a religious practice?
We provide a nurturing and inclusive environment which does not follow or subscribe to any particular religion or dogma. Our spiritual philosophy is very simple and can support any religion; we help you to increase your awareness of all aspects of the self, including your connection to spirit and your version of the "divine".

I tell a lot of people about yoga. I keep saying, “Why don’t you get into yoga, it’s the best, the best thing ever! Not only does it improve your physical strength and tones your body, it also gives you mental replenishment…”
I am very happy I have found yoga, it’s incredible. I think not many of my generation understand how good it is, have any idea of what it is about, or realise the benefits of yoga… So, I tell as many people as I can,
“Get into it, the results are amazing!” read more about Sylvia

Claire & Belinda’s eclectic approach to yoga means that classes are always different, I am never bored, and what adds to my pleasure is that it is fun! I never come into a class & think “Oh, here we go again”, this is what keeps me coming back. We laugh, it is social and I enjoy mixing with the other students, people of all ages, it keeps me young…
As I am heading into my late 60's I know yoga is very good for my health, even more so than when I was younger, it helps me to concentrate on myself for set times during the week and brings me back to me. A lot of the weight bearing and opening postures are very challenging and you use your body in a yoga class in ways that you just don’t do in everyday life. But if you don’t use all the bits then they stop working, and the older you get the more important this becomes.
Yoga is not for me a place to do amazing poses or push my body beyond its limits, but to be kind and caring to myself..." read more about Maree

My introduction to SunYoga came through my sister who started doing pre-natal yoga. I started going to SunYoga weekly, but a bit sporadically, on & off, life got in the way, you know how it is…? But gradually I started to notice that when I didn’t do my yoga I didn’t feel so good, and that when I did come regularly it made a big difference.
My twice weekly yoga is like my medicine, every 3 days I get my dose, my fix, and I really look forward to it…

After a prolapsed disc injury in 1987, I suffered from constant sciatica down my left leg. It was very painful, tiring and quite debilitating. My doctor and physiotherapist both told me that I would never fully recover, I would always have back problems and that I would have sciatica for the rest of my life! I didn’t imagine that yoga would cure my back but the classes felt good, I was very comfortable with Claire and my chronic back pain started to improve.
When Claire started teaching more and moved to Sunshine I upped my attendance to twice weekly. This change made a big difference to my flexibility and my back problems quietly improved some more. One morning I was lying in bed, contemplating life and it just dawned on me,
“My back pain is gone, I can’t remember the last time I had sciatica!”
