September 2022, Term 4

Dear SunYogis,

I am really looking forward to term 4. For many reasons. We will have more sunshine and warmer weather.  Also because I will be announcing some new offerings in the way of mini retreats and workshops.  More to follow.

This last term, classes have been very grounded and calm energetically.  I feel we have all needed this after the last tumultuous couple of years full of uncertainty and change. We have still worked on strength and flexibility but as you know from our practice together….(those of you already practicing with me) …these aspects of our whole are cultivated with more ease when we raise awareness of our grounded-ness using embodiment and breath practices in our asana.  This of course will continue AND I will be inviting you to move a little more, challenge your self a little more and find “your edge.” My current students will have heard me discuss this concept of working with our edge and that is different for all of us. Erich Schiffmann talks about this in his book: Yoga – The Spirit and Practice of Moving Into Stillness. Here is an excerpt.

“A large part of the art and skill in yoga lies in sensing just how far to move into a stretch. If you don’t go far enough, there is no challenge to the muscles, no intensity, no stretch, and little possibility for opening. Going too far, however, is an obvious violation of the body, increasing the possibility of both physical pain and injury. Somewhere between these two points is a degree of stretch that is in balance: intensity without pain, use without abuse, strenuousness without strain. You can experience this balance in every posture you do.

This place in the stretch is called your ‘edge’. The body’s edge in yoga is the place just before pain, but not pain itself…Sensing where your edges are and learning to hold the body there with awareness, moving with its often subtle shifts, can be called ‘playing the edge’. Your skill in yoga has little to do with the degree of flexibility or where your edges happen to be. Rather, it is a function of how sensitively you play your edges, no matter where they are.

The main thing to understand is that there is no such thing as a ‘completed’ or ‘ideal’ posture. Each posture is an ever-evolving, constantly moving energy phenomenon that is different from day to day, moment to moment, and person to person. The process of sensitively flirting with your edges and achieving perfect energy flow is not merely the means to achieve the pose – it is the pose…”

“Breathing Space” – mini retreats and workshops.

I am very excited to be offering some other opportunities outside of our term classes to dive deeper into our practices. Being able to expand on what we do in class and to share so much more of what is such a vast realm of all that is Yoga. This will come in the form of extended practices with space for deeper and longer relaxations, meditation & pranayama practices. Some will also include exploration of yoga philosophy & the sutras, Yoga Nidra, restorative yoga, Energy Codes practices and workshops and my offerings of Vedic & melodic chanting and singing bowls. I am still locking in details. At this stage I can confirm one of the dates.

Saturday 29th Oct there will be a longer mini retreat style class offered with added pranayama and meditation to take us into a beautiful Yoga Nidra practice. This offering at our Albion location will be separate to the term enrolment. More details to come.  Feel free to register your interest for this one as space will be limited. Time TBC.

Following on from that I am working on locking in a venue for monthly Sunday “Breathing Space” gatherings.

Why have I called them Breathing Space gatherings I hear you ask?  Various reasons actually. One of which is that my very first introduction to yoga was with a beautiful yoga teacher named Deepa Ebeli. This was in about 1995. Her yoga studio is called Breathing Space. I love the name and the memories and energy that are evoked when I reflect on the many years I spent practicing with Deepa. I still return to her classes when I get the opportunity and I highly recommend to anyone to do the same. Deepa’s knowledge and sharing of philosophy and the ancient teachings are beautifully weaved throughout her practices and is something I have always loved and found beneficial in a practice and something I aspire to being able to do for my own students.

A second reason….. Well, we all need a little extra Breathing Space. I feel we need it on many levels. Not just physically, but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually, way  more than we are aware of. So I’m looking forward to sharing and connecting with you all in this way in the future.

And a third reason….As we are understanding through our practices, more of what yoga teaches us and science is now supporting, the breath is one of the most important tools we have free access to in improving our overall health and wellbeing.

“Every system in the body relies on oxygen. From cognition to digestion, effective breathing can not only provide you with a greater sense of mental clarity, it can also help you sleep better, digest food more efficiently, improve your body’s immune response, and reduce stress levels. Many people who practice yoga, especially those who focus on the practice of  Pranayama, or breath control, have been shown to regulate the sympathetic nervous system, or the part of the body that controls breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.”
